The Brain

Your brain is amazingly complex, in fact according to scientists it is more complex than anything in the universe! Everything you do, everything you say, everything you think is controlled by your brain.

For example, clapping your hands, talking to friends, imagining the vastness of space, and more is all done effortlessly and efficiently by the brain.

The brain is a pink jelly-like body part that sits in your head. Your brain is compared to a lot of things. Some people compare it to a book because it stores tons of information, others compare it to a city where everything does what it needs to, and many people compare the brain to a computer because it takes in and processes tons of information. Let us think of the brain as your body’s command center, sending and receiving messages to and from all parts of the body.

For instance, let’s say you hear a loud boom, the sound goes to your ears, the ears tell the brain what it heard, your brain processes the information, and realizes you’ve just heard a firework!

As your command center, the brain splits the many tasks it does into specialized regions. The three main regions of the brain are the cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the brainstem.

  • The brainstem regulates a lot of our bodies functions automatically, for example it controls your breathing and heart beats.

  • The cerebellum’s main role is coordination, balance, and movement. The cerebellum helps keep you upright and move smoothly.

  • The cerebrum is responsible for a majority of functions. It processes and controls the 5 senses of sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing. The cerebrum also controls movement, speech, thought, emotions, memory, and learning. The cerebrum does so much we further split it into smaller parts to make it easier to organize.

In conclusion, your brain is a powerful, do it all, efficient command center. Your brain takes in information, processes it, and delivers a response. We split the processes it does into 3 main areas: brainstem for doing automatic tasks like breathing, cerebellum for balance and movement, and cerebrum for almost everything else.

How does your brain do all these incredible things? Your brain uses neurons to send and receive signals. Think of neurons like telephone wires, sending a signal long distances. Learn more about neurons here:

With so much happening in it, the cerebrum is an exciting place, let’s adventure more into the cerebrum and discover all it does! Learn more about the cerebrum here:
